Anchoring
Almost every boat has an anchor. But if it is not ready for immediate use or the
operator does not know how to anchor safely, then the boat and the voyage are
unsafe. Mastering the art of anchoring means more than just having
the right equipment onboard. You need to understand how your anchor works, how to
deploy it and what to do when it drags. This 6 hour class utilizes classroom and
onboard training and covers everything from selecting the right ground tackle and
anchorage to how to deploy your anchor and check for dragging. The class is
designed for operators at all skill levels from novice recreational boaters
to professional captains. Students will learn the strengths and weaknesses of
various types of ground tackle, proper techniques for deploying and weighing
anchor, proper crew communication for anchoring, the effects of wind, current,
bottom contour and consistency, and how to choose the best place to anchor.
Students will also take part in hands-on exercises onboard to practice several
anchoring scenarios.
