Safety I: Emergencies Underway
Whether you are a fisherman, offshore sailor, bay cruisers, or day tripper,
knowing how to handle emergencies onboard is an essential skill for everyone who
goes out on the water. This two day, 12 hour classroom and onboard training
course covers how to prevent and cope with emergencies underway. We will cover
everything from recovering a man overboard and medical emergencies to onboard
fires and abandoning ship. During the class, students will participate in
hands-on exercises to become familiar with techniques from using a fire
extinguisher and lighting signal flares, to locating a crew overboard and
recovering a life-sized dummy from the water. This course is designed for
all mariners, from the novice boater to the experienced cruiser. Gain the
knowledge to prevent an onboard emergency and be prepared to handle unexpected
emergencies.

FIRST AID & CPR with AED (STCW)
This 8-Hour First Aid & CPR with AED class is designed
for all mariners both recreational and professional. The class
is approved by the US Coast Guard to satisfy the requirements for
mariners under the International Convention on the Standards of
Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) and satisfies the
requirements for a Coast Guard Captain's license. While, much of
the information and training is the same as what you would receive
in other land-based First Aid and CPR classes, there is additional
information and emphasis on issues pertinent to professional
mariners and recreational boaters. Circumstances involving waterborne
accidents require specific training that may not be addressed in
other First Aid & CPR classes.
Students will also be trained in the use of Automated External
Defibrillators (AED) like the ones you may have seen in airports.
AED's are essential lifesaving equipment for victims of life
threatening cardiac arrhythmias such as ventricular fibrillation
or tachycardia. In situations where emergency medical care will
be delayed such as aboard a vessel, AED's can mean the difference
between survival and death.
Upon successful completion of this class, students will receive
an STCW First Aid & CPR certificate. This class is accepted by
American Sailing Association & U.S. Sailing for certification in First Aid & CPR.
