Onboard Navigation
Can you safely navigate without GPS? All electronics fail at some point and the prudent
mariner never relies on one device or piece of information to navigate safely. This one-day,
onboard training course emphasizes traditional navigation & piloting techniques and
builds on the skills taught in our Basic Navigation & Piloting Class. In this course,
taught onboard our 27’ Albin down east cruiser, you will practice traditional
navigation techniques including determining your position by taking visual bearings,
steering by compass and ranges, and executing a passage plan. This course is designed
for any boater who ventures more than 100 yards from their own dock. Students will
take the wheel and the binoculars to develop and hone their skills and confidence in
getting safely from point A to B without GPS.

lights, navigating around commercial traffic, using Radar and AIS, and using
lighted ATONs and ranges to determine our position. It is designed for everyone,
