Electrical Systems for Cruisers
As modern yachts get more sophisticated, the primary electrical system from the batteries to the charging source is critical to supporting all of the equipment loads. A properly designed and maintained electrical system means less failure that can leave you literally in the dark.
Speaker Bio:
Bob Campbell is the founder and president of Marine Electric Systems which specializes in designing, installing and servicing electrical systems for cruising boats that will be away from shore power. Bob grew up sailing and boating on the Chesapeake Bay. He served three years at sea aboard U.S. Army transport ships and landing craft which took him across the Pacific to Vietnam. He has been a marine electrician for more than 20 years and is certified by ABYC.
When Bob is not chasing electrons, he cruises the Chesapeake Bay aboard his Pearson 39 “Proud Mary.” He has made many offshore and coastal passages and has chartered all over the world.
Communication for Cruisers: from the Dock to the Ocean
This seminar takes a look at the "patchwork quilt" concept of using different digital communication technologies to keep in touch while cruising and how to adapt these technologies to your needs and budget.
- WIFI
- VOIP
- VHF
- SSB
- AIS
- DSC
Speaker Bio:
Steven Bowden is a native Floridian who grew up sailing and scuba diving. He worked for charter companies as diverse as Caribbean Sailing Yachts and Windjammer. Bowden later began working with television and video production companies including the Scuba World TV Series, Sea Fans Video Magazine and TravelVision International.
Bowden and his wife Pamela House lived aboard their 40 foot cutter "Narkosis" for five years. Together, they founded SeaTech Systems in 1994 to design, build and market integrated navigation, communication and weather systems based on the personal computer.

The History of Navigation: then and now
Take journey through 4,000 year evolution of marine navigation highlighting the world's greatest explorers and famous inventors who developed navigation instruments.

Weems & Plath, over 80 years old, is the world largest manufacturer of navigation instruments. Peter has been a sail and power boater all his life. He grew up sailing in the NW and now lives in Annapolis, Maryland. He owns a Zimmerman 36 which he and his wife Cathie took to the Bahamas in 2006, Maine in 2007, the Great Lakes & British Columbia in 2008. Peter has logged over 15,000 ocean miles on trips to the Panama Canal, South Pacific, North Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Caribbean.
Navigating the ICW
The Intra Coastal Waterway offers beautiful cruising grounds and an opportunity for a more relaxed passage pace for snow birds. However, the ICW also presents navigational challenges that require knowledge and vigilance. Bridges, tides, currents, buoyage, shoaling and the inside scoop on choosing the right anchorages or marinas are a few of the topics covered in this seminar.
Speaker Bio:
Captain Paul Truelove is a full time professional captain and instructor. He teaches to a broad spectrum of sailors and boaters from novices to professional mariners seeking a USCG license. Paul and his wife Linda, a professional yacht chef, are part time live-aboards that cruise the ICW every winter aboard the motorsailer “True Love.”
Panel Discussion: Pre-Cruise Preparation
Ralph Naranjo, John Martino and Chuck O’Maley will engage the audience in a two-way panel discussion of preparing both the boat and the sailor for offshore and coastwise passages.
SEPTEMBER 26
Cruiser’s Weather Briefing:
