MARINE WEATHER: LEVEL I

This 2-day marine weather class is taught by well- known and recently retired NOAA/NWS Ocean Prediction Center meteorologist, Lee Chesneau. The course is designed to familiarize boaters with the basic principles of marine weather formation and movement and how to use the information at hand to make safe boating decisions. Students learn how to use surface pressure maps and make observations of local weather conditions to observe frontal and non-frontal systems. The course combines lectures and hands-on practical exercises that include making weather observations, weather log keeping, obtaining current weather predictions from various sources, and participating in a simulated cruise using historical weather data obtained from the Ocean Prediction Center Archives and actual vessel log entries.

Topics:

  • Cloud Identification
  • Barometer Reading
  • Reading Weather Maps
  • Fronts, Squalls, Storms
  • Fog
  • Convection
  • Prevailing Winds

  • Local Weather
  • Beaufort Scale
  • Waves
  • High & Low Pressure Systems
  • Receiving Weather Data

MARINE WEATHER: LEVEL II

This 2-day class builds on the foundation gained in the Level I class. Students will perform several practical exercises to reinforce their understanding of surface weather charts. The class also introduces students to the 3-D aspects of weather such as 500 Mb upper air flow charts, ridges, and troughs. Understanding the upper air movement and its influence on the corresponding surface systems is an essential first step in making weather routing decisions. This class is essential for anyone venturing offshore and recommended for any other boater looking to further understand marine weather.

Topics:

  • 500 Mb Upper Air Charts
  • Troughs & Ridges
  • 500 Mb Flow Patterns
  • Practical Exercises using real-time Weather Charts

Class Schedule:
    TBA

Location: Annapolis School of Seamanship [MAP/DIRECTIONS]
Tuition: $425
Instructor: Lee S. Chesneau
Prerequisite: None
Enroll: Pre-registration is required
Max Size: 12 Students
